Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a powerful, brain-based therapy that helps you access and process deeply held trauma, emotions, and patterns that may be hard to reach with talk therapy alone. By focusing your gaze on specific eye positions called brainspots. Your brain and body are able to unlock and release what’s been stuck beneath the surface. It’s a gentle yet effective method that supports deep emotional healing, often without needing to rehash painful memories in detail.

Why You Should Consider Brainspotting

There are many reasons you may be considering Brainspotting. Maybe you’ve hit a wall with other therapy approaches and are interested in trying a new approach. Maybe you’re interested in what else is possible within your own complex mind and want to expand into your highest potential.

Regardless, the next step in your journey may be a relaxing, exciting, safe, and often unpredictable online Brainspotting session within the walls of your own home. A typical session can have a lasting impact on how you process your daily thoughts and unlock the potential you know is being held back.

  • Your session will begin with time to discuss the thoughts and feelings you want to focus on.
  • Then we will use various techniques to locate the brainspot in your visual field by identifying the somatic (physical body) sensation of the feeling or thought.
  • Often we do this by following a pointer until you feel a spike in the physical sensation.
  • Once found, we will allow space for you to talk through (or silently feel through) your thoughts and feelings, noticing together where the experience takes you.
  • Your session will end with a relaxing discussion of next steps and ideas to think about between sessions.

In some sessions, we may not find the perfect spot, and that’s ok! There is still valuable work being done during the process and each session is valuable progress toward your goals. It’s important to remember therapy is a process and every activity moves you toward being a more authentic and self-accepting person.

As a client, you are not restricted to one therapy approach. You may find it helpful to alternate between other forms of therapy and specific Brainspotting sessions. Your needs drive your therapy plan, which is why I offer a variety of therapeutic approaches.

Where You Look Affects How You Feel

Brainspotting was discovered by David Grand in 2003 during an EMDR session with his client, a competitive figure skater, who was struggling with a performance block. Dr. Grand noticed during the traditional side-to-side eye movements of their EMDR session that the client’s eyes wobbled for a quick second on a certain spot in her visual field. Following his intuition to stay with the client’s experience, he suggested that she allow her eyes to rest on the spot and notice any sensations

Surprisingly to both the client and therapist, a deeper level of processing occurred than in previous sessions, allowing the client to delve into previously unexplored internal territory. At the end of the session, Dr. Grand told the client to let him know if she noticed anything different during the week. The next day, the figure skater called to let him know that she had successfully performed the previously unattainable triple loop jump not only once, but repeatedly that day. After this unexpected therapeutic and performance breakthrough, Brainspotting began to be studied and developed into an effective and evolving intervention.
